MEDICAL HISTORY REVIEW
A dental hygienist will review your medical history, including any changes in your overall health or medications. This information helps them understand how your general health may impact your oral health.
X-RAYS
X-rays will be taken if due or as needed for specific concerns. Typically, Bitewings are taken once every 12 months, and a Panoramic x-ray is taken once every five years. X-rays are crucial for detecting issues not visible during a visual examination, such as cavities between teeth, impacted teeth, bone loss, infections, and many other conditions. Protection robes are available by request.
Fun fact about dental x-rays: Dental x-rays have a very low amount of radiation exposure. For example, you get more radiation exposure from a short flight on a plane or even from eating a banana, which contains naturally occurring radioactive potassium. In fact, the radiation from a typical dental x-ray is comparable to just a few hours of everyday background radiation from the environment.
VISUAL EXAMINATION
The dentist will visually examine your teeth, gums, tongue, and other oral tissues for signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, or other issues. They may use a mirror and dental tools to inspect each tooth and check for abnormalities.
PROFESSIONAL CLEANING
A dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth to help prevent cavities, gum disease, and halitosis (bad breath). They may also polish your teeth and provide flossing tips for better at-home care. Before you leave, the hygienist will schedule your next visit.

GUM HEALTH ASSESSMENT
The health of your gums is crucial for overall oral health. The dentist or hygienist will assess your gum health, looking for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Measurements may be taken to evaluate the depth of the pockets between your gums and teeth.
ORAL CANCER SCREENING
The dentist will check for signs of oral cancer, examining your tongue, cheeks, throat, and the roof of your mouth. Early detection of oral cancer is essential for successful treatment.
DISCUSSION AND EDUCATION
The dentist will discuss their findings with you and provide guidance on maintaining or improving your oral health. They may offer advice on proper oral hygiene practices, diet, and lifestyle choices that can impact your teeth and gums.
TREATMENT PLANNING
If any dental issues are identified, the dentist will discuss treatment options and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include scheduling additional appointments for procedures such as fillings, crowns, or other dental treatments.
Attending regular 6-month dental checkups helps catch dental issues early, often before they cause noticeable symptoms. It’s also an opportunity to receive professional guidance on oral care practices and maintain a healthy smile. Remember to communicate any concerns or changes in your oral health to your dentist during these appointments.
